SEATTLE – In a significant fleet expansion, American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) has placed an order for 115 Boeing (NYSE:BA) 737-10 jets, the largest model in the 737 MAX series. This order includes 85 new jets and the conversion of 30 previous orders from the smaller 737-8 variant. Additionally, the airline holds options for 75 more 737-10 aircraft.
American Airlines aims to modernize its fleet with this move, which more than doubles its 737 MAX orders, totaling over 150 airplanes. The 737-10’s introduction is expected to bolster the airline’s operational efficiency, complementing its existing 737-8s.
The larger 737-10 model can seat up to 230 passengers and offers a range of up to 3,100 nautical miles, positioning it as a key asset for American’s domestic and short-haul international network.
Boeing’s 737-8 variant is known for its improved fuel, emissions, and cost performance, capable of flying 3,500 nautical miles and accommodating between 162 to 210 passengers based on configuration. The 737-10, on the other hand, is touted for its per-seat economics, which may appeal to airlines looking to maximize efficiency.
American’s CEO, Robert Isom, highlighted the company’s decade-long efforts to modernize and simplify its fleet, emphasizing the importance of new, efficient aircraft in maintaining operational reliability and meeting customer demand.
Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed gratitude for American’s trust in Boeing and the 737 MAX family, underscoring the 737-10’s potential contributions to the airline’s efficiency and network flexibility.
The deal is part of American’s long-term growth strategy and aligns with Boeing’s commitment to delivering modern fleets to its customers. Over the next decade, American will add more than 180 Boeing aircraft, including 737 MAXs and 787 Dreamliners, to its fleet.
