CHICAGO – GE HealthCare (NASDAQ:GEHC) has announced the U.S. FDA 510(k) Clearance of IONIC Health’s nCommand Lite technology, a system designed to enhance remote operations in radiology departments. This technology, which is vendor-neutral and supports multiple imaging modalities, will be distributed exclusively by GE HealthCare.

The nCommand Lite system allows remote experts to provide real-time assistance to technologists operating scanners, facilitating remote patient scanning support, and image viewing and review. These features aim to address the challenges of staff shortages in radiology departments, a concern highlighted by a recent study showing 80% of departments facing this issue.

GE HealthCare’s integration of nCommand Lite into its portfolio is part of a broader commitment to investing in remote operations technology. The company’s senior vice president, Rekha Ranganathan, emphasized the importance of providing solutions that increase patient access to care, especially for those requiring complex support from off-site technologists.

IONIC Health’s CEO, José Leovigildo Coelho, expressed excitement over the FDA clearance of nCommand Lite, which is based on the nCommand platform developed in Brazil. Coelho noted the system’s potential to scale and alleviate staffing shortages, as well as the company’s ambition to expand the technology’s availability globally in collaboration with GE HealthCare.

The nCommand Lite system is designed to connect to multiple scanners simultaneously and is optimized for low bandwidth consumption, enhancing the user experience. However, it is important to note that images reviewed remotely through this system are not intended for diagnostic use.

This announcement comes as both companies aim to address operational challenges and workforce shortages in healthcare, offering innovative solutions that could potentially streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency across various imaging technologies.

GE HealthCare is a $19.6 billion business with a century-long history in the medical technology and diagnostics field, while IONIC Health is pioneering diagnostic medicine technology in Brazil and has recently expanded its operations to the United States and Europe.
